To help your vehicle drive in the safest and best condition possible, we want drivers to understand why regular tire service is so important. Many drivers know that wheel alignment is crucial, but they may be wondering, “How often should I balance my tires?” Tire balancing is a simple and relatively inexpensive tire service that will keep you driving safely.

What does it mean when a tire goes “out of balance?” This means that one section of the tire or rim is heavier than in other spots. Imperfections, blemishes in the rubber, and damage to a tire or rim can throw it out of balance. If you continue to drive your vehicle with unbalanced tires (especially at the higher speed limits), you will start to experience the problems listed below. Damage will also be occurring to your tires, suspension system, and the steering system.

Just how is a tire balanced, you ask? Each wheel is removed from the car and placed on a computerized machine which spins it around to determine which side is the heaviest. A small lead weight is then attached to the rim at a point to counter-balance any heavy spots until the weight is the same on all sides of the wheel.

Are you having any of the steering problems described below?

  • Your are swerving and fighting the steering wheel to keep the car going straight down the road;
  • You feel every little bump on the road;
  • The steering wheel is vibrating more than normal;
  • The steering wheel feels loose so you don’t feel in control.

Because the signs of a misalignment or tire out of balance are similar, schedule a simple tire service so your mechanic can inspect your tires and wheels. They can determine what is needed and take care of it quickly and easily.
