What are the Signs of a Bad Muffler?

In order for your vehicle to keep running smoothly, all of its components need to be in good working order. Taking the time for regular car inspections and keeping up with needed repairs is the best way to ensure that everything is working as it should. This inspection should include the mufflers and exhaust both. Your exhaust system is most effective when it is neither seen nor heard. Unfortunately, this can also mean that it is out of sight and out of mind.

You may be asking, “What are the signs of a bad muffler?” Here are three signs that you may notice if there are problems developing in the exhaust system:

  1. Loud rumbling noise — The most obvious sign is the volume of your muffler. When working properly, the muffler should operate quietly in the background. When something goes wrong, it may sound like a roaring monster.
  2.  Decreased fuel efficiency — A vehicle with a well-tuned exhaust system gets the best gas mileage. More trips than usual to the pump could mean that there is a problem. With computer sensors in newer vehicles that monitor fuel use and performance level, problems can be caught early on before it becomes serious.
  3. Bad odors — When working properly, your muffler funnels exhaust fumes outside. If there is a leak in the muffler, those fumes could be circulating inside your car. This is dangerous as exhaust fumes can be fatal over time.
